The approach aims to 1) widen the analytical focus of text analysis; and 2) highlight the social significance of all representational modes. The approach draws on Social Semiotics as an overall integrating theory, and analytic means, notably for the description and analysis of image; Discourse Analysis, notably for writing; and Graphic Design, notably for typography and layout. I will draw on a study of secondary school textbooks to exemplify the approach.
