Seminar with Dr. Jeff Bezemer, University of London, UK : In this talk I discuss a multimodal approach to contemporary design and text making. The approach aims to 1) widen the analytical focus of text analysis; and 2) highlight the social significance of all representational modes. The approach draws on Social Semiotics as an overall integrating theory, and analytic means, notably for the description and analysis of image; Discourse Analysis, notably for writing; and Graphic Design, notably for typography and layout. I will draw on a study of secondary school textbooks to exemplify the approach.

In the sand goby, sperm competition arises when parasitically spawning males enter nests and release sperm. Virtually all types of males spawn parasitically: nest-holding males with eggs, nest-holding males without eggs, males in breeding colouration without nests, and sneaker morph males without breeding coloration but with huge testis. They seem to use female behaviour as their prime cue for a parasitic spawning opportunity.
